BMW’s Gran Coupe is the Next 6 Series

Finally, a new and exciting BMW to look forward to, as the German car-maker has unveiled the 6 Series Gran Coupe, which will directly compete with the Mercedes CLS. Only BMW’s looks a lot better. The Gran Coupe is a few inches longer than a 5 series, and a few inches lower as well, and, as you can see, features some very slick and elegant styling. The car should be on the market early next year.

The Gran Coupe is expected to share the 6-Series name and will join the two-door 6-Series coupe and cabriolet models. There may also be a high-performance M model in the pipeline. BMW says that the Gran Coupe concept measures “almost five meters,” which is 196.9 inches long, or about 2.9 inches shorter than a 7 Series and 3.8 inches longer than the new 5. At 55.1 inches tall, the Gran Coupe is almost four inches lower than either conventional sedan. Engines are expected to be shared with the 6-Series and Draeger did not rule out the possibility of a hybrid version in future.
Diesel, gasoline and possibly even hybrid drivetrains are slated for the new Gran Coupe, which will look very similar to the concept unveiled in China, retaining both its frameless door glass and distinctive LED driving lights and taillights.

The Gran Coupe concept has a traditional B-pillar and frameless doors along with a nicely executed Hofmeister kink. LED headlamps bookend a “shark-like” twin-kidney grille that nicely updates the current 6 Series’ nose. Taillamps are 5 Series GT-like, indicating the direction of all future BMW models. LED center high-mounted brake lights are hidden in the rear window, and are visible only when they light up. The lights are placed in the roof’s kink and fill the entire width of the rear window.

Presumably, BMW will have to do something else with these for the 6 Series convertible, which it plans to bring to market about the same time as the two-door coupe early next year. Prices have not been announced, but it is expected to fall in line with the rest of the 6-Series line-up and be competitive with both the Mercedes CLS and Audi A7 prices.
