Hyundai Equus 2011 hits North America
Hyundai’s latest and most upscale foray into the luxury segment was revealed on Thursday at the New York auto show when the 2011 Equus sedan hit North America.
The Equus is revealed to be the most expensive Korean vehicle to land in the U. S. market, and whether or not it will receive an overwhelming response by U. S. consumers is what Hyundai has to now wait for. The company also served up more specifics about the Equus, which will start from about $55,000 when it goes on sale late this summer.
Power is drawn from Hyundai’s Tau 4.6-liter V8 making 385 hp and 333 lb-ft of torque (with premium fuel). It’s expected to get 16 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway and 19 combined.
The Equus is the third rear-wheel vehicle on this chassis, which has spawned the well-received Genesis coupe and sedan. The Equus is 7.2 inches longer than the four-door Genesis.
Hyundai is taking aim at a wide range of competitors with the Equus, including the Mercedes S550, the Lexus LS 460 and the Audi A8.
The interior is laden with leather and technology, including navigation, satellite radio and Bluetooth. The suspension has continuous damping control, and 19-inch chrome alloy wheels are standard.
“Equus takes Hyundai’s formula for intelligent luxury to a new level,” John Krafcik, CEO of Hyundai Motor America, said in a statement. “We’ve applied the lessons in engineering excellence we’ve learned with Genesis to the Equus, while adding a new level of customer experience that will further differentiate our take on luxury from the traditional premium brands.”
Kia Soul comfortable statement-making ride
The Kia Soul 2010 is a new subcompact car from this Korean automaker. The Soul is lauded for being a cool, affordable ride with a growing emphasis on personality, versatility and technology. Soul is a front-wheel drive, 4-door wagon that’s slightly larger than Kia’s Rio. Four trim levels are offered: Soul, Soul+, Soul! (exclaim), and Soul sport. Base Soul models are powered by a 122-horsepower 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that teams with a 5-speed manual transmission. Standard on the other versions is a 142-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that pairs with a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic.
With its boxy shape, the 2010 Soul clearly has the Scion xB in its sights. However, the Kia has more rounded edges and a more angled greenhouse that features sharp-looking, blacked-out A-pillars. Inside, a stylish design available in two-tone hues complements straightforward controls. In terms of size, the Soul slots in between the too-small original xB and the current too-big (for some) xB, providing ample interior space and just enough cargo capacity.
The interior features lots of interesting shapes, including a center stack that juts out in a pod featuring those simple audio and climate controls. Available features like special upholstery and two-tone color schemes make the all-black Honda Fit and Scion xB cabins seem unimaginative and depressing.
The amount of interior room is impressive, with high-mounted seats granting all passengers (regardless of size) an ample amount of legroom. The tall roof line leaves lots of space for gelled coifs. With the backseat raised or lowered, cargo room is significantly lacking compared to the cavernous xB and Fit, although the Soul’s boxy shape certainly helps when carrying large items.
Available safety features include ABS, traction control, an antiskid system, front-side airbags, and curtain-side airbags. Power windows and locks are standard on all models. The base Soul has 15-inch wheels. Soul+ adds 16-inch alloy wheels, remote keyless entry, and a wireless cell-phone link. Soul! has a sunroof and 18-inch wheels. Soul sport has unique 18-inch wheels, sport suspension, and specific interior and exterior trim.

Audi plans expansion of hybrids, electrics
Audi plans a rapid expansion of plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles over the next few years as a key component in Volkswagen Group’s strategy to dominate the alternative-powertrain market by decade’s end.
Michael Dick, Audi’s board member for technical development, told Automotive News that the next-generation A6 sedan will have the potential to be a full hybrid by the end of 2012. The A6 would join the recently introduced hybrid A8 sedan at the Geneva auto show and the soon-to-be-launched Q5 hybrid crossover.
Hybrid capability may stretch to each part of Audi’s lineup by the end of the decade.
By 2020, Audi wants to increase the efficiency of its internal combustion engines by 30 percent and wants 5 percent of the brand’s lineup to be electric, Dick said.
The challenge with electric vehicles “is to make all of these things possible for series production,” he said.
“In the future, our customers will be able to choose from an increasingly broad range of driveline technologies,” Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said in Geneva.
“We shall offer electric power in the best possible forms for a wide range of mobility needs. The hybrid driveline will be followed by all-electric vehicles.
“The e-tron name will have an important part to play. Just as ‘quattro’ has become a synonym for all-wheel drive, so ‘e-tron’ is to be the Audi brand name for electric mobility.”
Audi recently set up a division to develop and produce a range of high-priced e-tron electric cars starting in 2012. The brand’s electric-car approach is different from that of rival BMW, which is developing smaller vehicles designed for urban commuting.
Parent VW Group wants to be No. 1 in hybrid and electric cars before the end of the decade, increasing its electric-vehicle market share to 3 percent of its fleet by 2018.
Globally, VW Group plans to launch a full-electric version of its Up minicar, the E-UP, the E-Golf and the E-Jetta in 2013. To get ready for those debuts, VW will debut a test fleet of 500 electric Golfs globally next year.
For now, only the Jetta electric will go to the United States, VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn said.
He said: “We will take the hybrid out of its niche status with our high-volume models.”
